Reading Lonesome Dove

I just started reading Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry.  I have seen the movie a few times (one of my favorites), but I have never read the book.  I have started it once or twice, but for some reason I never made it through it.  But I love reading, and I am determined to read it through this time.

Anyway, as I was reading, I came across a line that made me laugh out loud.  The character Augustus “Gus” McCrae is hilarious, but this line, for some reason, just about earned an Orange Juice award.

The line is on page 108 of the hardback edition, at the end of chapter 9.  Newt had finally been invited on a cattle raid into Mexico with the older men, and Captain Call had given him a pistol (the first one he could call his own).  He is talking to Deets, and they were joking about Newt getting put in charge of the ranch.  Gus saw them “grinning back and forth at one another” and said:

“Look at ‘em,” Augustus said. “You’d think they just discovered teeth.”

I know that may not be funny here, but for some reason, it just drew a guffaw out of me, and I thought I would share it.
