It Is the Soldier

The Soldier

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the soldier,
who salutes the flag,
who serves under the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.

By Father Dennis Edward O’Brien, USMC

Amen.

It is the reporter, not the soldier, Who records the crimes of government.
It is the poet, not the soldier, Who gives us the words to sing and shout.
It is the organizer, not the soldier, Who stands defenseless in front of tyrants.
It is the defender of the justice, Who needs no flag, Who serves the people,
And Who needs no coffin. Who forgives the soldier who nails him to the cross.

  2. Matthew Taylor Says:

The soldier that began the battle is the soldier behind the glass.

Seen and heard but unaffected by the relish and insidious tone of destruction.

  3. Jean-Jacques de Chazal Says:

The poet, journalist and soldier all have their place and purpose.
