[...] Managing expectations - a valuable skill and worth the time - This is a key skill in any business. I wish that the burger jockeys at the local fast food joint would take the time to understand this concept. Good post Michael! One of the biggest things I have learned since I have been in IT is that you have to develop the skill of managing customer expectations (to clarify, the term “customer” means the people for whom you are doing your job - clients, users, etc.). If your customer believes you can perform a service that you cannot, then you have not done a good job in managing expectations, and you will likely end up dissapointing him and hurting the professional relationship.
LV,

That is a wonderful thing to hear from a customer. I hope you don't mind, but I shared that with the company. They will love that.

It comes as no surprise that this is coming from someone who works at Accuvant. We utilize Accuvant regularly in my company and we have been insanely impressed with the commitment, accuracy, technical proficiency, and yes the managed expectations that they give. It's been a nice relationship even if I am not the primary POC between my company and you guys. I've also found that the art of managing expectations is important in a full time employment job as well, for users, my manager, and senior management. Unfortunately, it is a bit thinner line to keep on the right side of, and much more difficult, it seems.

One other thing related to this that I like about Accuvant (and usually endears me more to vendor salespeople) are those that can be up front and honest. If a product is weak in an area, admit it, tell me. Our Accuvant contacts have always been honest, even if it means not recommending a vendor or something because they may not meet our needs quite as well.

Michael- sounds like you just heap crap on those lousy vendors and that is why they should use a good reseller like accuvant to protect them from those lying no-goodnicks. What would you do working for a vendor?
