So Oracle decided to patch. I am not a Microsoft bigot by any means, but at least they patch monthly. Sheesh! What’s up, Mr. Ellison??? By the way, is Larry Ellison a little stuck on himself? Take a look at the picture on the right, then take a look at the picture at the link with his name above. Sheesh. But I digress…
Mike Fratto made a lot of sense when he had this to say:
“Oracle has a horrible track record in acknowledging and fixing problems. Peruse the advisories at
NGS Software Ltd. or
Red Database Security for Oracle issues and you will see that in many cases the time from vendor to notification to the time to patch is measures in months, sometimes over a year. We aren’t talking piddly little vulnerabilities either. These are pretty serious holes…. Kids, the database is where the data is! If the database gets owned, kiss your information goodbye. It’s time you Oracle software owners starting demanding faster patches from Oracle. “
I don’t use Oracle, but all this bloated, better-than-Microsoft stuff needs to be toned down in light of this kind of evidence. And this is out there, folks! The bloggers are on this, and it needs to be publicized even more! Oracle controls something like 40% or the market, the last I heard, so there is a big hole there.
Just remember, friends, DEFENSE-IN-DEPTH!!!

Look at this one and this one. It seems that MySpace is cooperating
with the authorities in these arrests. MySpace is owned by
Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, which also owns FOX News Channel, FX, etc, etc, etc. They are doing the right thing.
I would hate to try to get Google to
cooperate in cases like this. They love to cooperate with China but seem to find it difficult to give up records to the US Government to help protect children from pornography, citing privacy concerns. Whether or not
you agree with the government’s request, you have to admit that Google is being about as hypocritical as they can get.

More Apple holes. I love it! And think of the problems they will have when they start running Windows!
Yes, I stole the image and added the holes. Great work, huh?!

One of my users recently sent me a Paypal phishing email. It is to her credit that she sent it to me. Since she uses Paypal for many things, this email worried her. Here is a picture of the email, with a little cut off from the bottom (click on the pictures for a better view):

The user asked me if this was legit. I knew it was not, but I wanted to look at the links, knowing that they would lead to some bogus site. What threw me at first is I found that the first link actually pointed to Paypal’s actual site. See below:

My first thought was, “Can this actually be legit?” Then I looked at the next link, and I saw that it pointed to an alternate site. See below:

This link is legit:

This one is bad:

And look at this disclaimer. Very nice:

I thought this was a very interesting email. I am sure this has been done before, but I haven’t looked as closely lately at these emails. This is a seriously dangerous email, especially since I had to take a second glance. I wonder how many people are going to fall for this one?

My friend and mentor, Tom Foucha (he’s the bald one). He works with a company called NetScaler. They are a start-up SSL VPN company. They got a booth right at the end of a row. Very nice location.
A picture of some of the graphics at the main keynote stage.
The stage.
Mr. Gates, in all his geeky glory.
This was the MC. He was a fairly annoying fellow. Not funny at all. They really need to find some geek comic that actually somewhat understands what we freaks think like.

Well, everything worked! We need to refine some of the processes since it took a while for the restoration, but it worked. I am greatly relieved. Now I can get some work done on my other 1500 projects.
I was going to take some pictures, but they won’t allow any photography in the center, so sorry about that. I am, however, going to be posting some pictures of the RSA trip. I figure this blog needs some graphics to spruce it up a bit.

Well, I have to say that I am friggin’ tired. My network admin and I are getting ready for our disaster recovery test, scheduled for this Thursday. We recently implemented VMware with a Dell / EMC SAN, so this will be the first time we test on this platform. Since we just recently got everything (except SQL) moved over, it has been nuts trying to plan this out. I know once we get it all in place we will be golden, but these late nights are killing both of us. Anyway, I’ll post again after the test with the results.
